Floor matting is used everywhere in homes, offices and industrial facilities for many different purposes. Floor matting is classified as indoor, outdoor, and multi-purpose matting. The floor matting name often describes the main purpose for which the matting was designed, as seen below:
• Scraper and wiper mats - Scraper mats as indicated by their name are designed to scrape heavy deposits of dirt off usually at any entrance. Wiper mats have a similar use but they are used for finishing the job to remove light dirt and/or dust.
• Designer mats - As the name suggests, these mats add to the decor of the area around them. They can also include logos or even directional guidance signs.
• Safety mats - The primary usage for safety matting is to deter slipping. They are also designed to cushion a fall, to cover wiring, or to simply alert all traffic in the area to a potential danger.
• Anti-fatigue mats - Prolonged standing in a single location can lead to feet/leg fatigue and discomfort. In severe cases, varicose veins can develop because the valves of the leg veins do not function properly with no movement. Anti-fatigue matting is specially designed to provide limited movement under the feet even when a person is confined to a stationary area.
• Chair mats/runners - Chair mats are often placed under a chair to protect the floor surface from the frequent movement. They can also facilitate easier movement of the chair over the surface. Runners are typically long narrow mats that pass along a hallway in a high traffic area.
• Anti-static mats - This special purpose matting is often required by the job when small electrical charges might interfere with the work people perform in the area.
• Absorption mats - As the name implies, this matting is designed for high absorption of liquid that is spilled in the area.
